iPads for public use

JA is currently working on a project to prepare iPads (all models) for use by the public.

In order to preserve patron privacy, we are using the Apple Configurator  to prepare and supervise the devices.  The Apple Configurator will allow the library to control which apps are available on the devices.  It also supports different groups, so (for example) the library may configure a subset of devices with apps for children only.

The planned hardware configuration includes purchase of:

  1. A device with the MAC O/S (we are starting the project with a MAC Mini)
  2. A Griffin MultiDock 2 Charging & Storage Station for iPads (and necessary cables)
  3. iPads (with nice cases and a good warranty)

The library will be able to loan iPads to patrons (or use them for classes) and after usage, the iPad(s) can be returned to the dock where the original configuration is reapplied (returning the iPad to its original state and removing anything that the patron had done during the session).

We are beginning the project with a small scale (less than 20 devices) and will need experience to see how it can be scaled up.

There is no physical security aspect to the solution; checking the devices out to patrons and ensuring their return will be up to library staff.
